De Troon der Gerechtigheid (2026)

Der Thron der Gerechtigkeit (2026)

This novel addresses three critical years in the early history of the International Court of Justice (1922-1924). It vividly portrays the clash of views and characters of eleven judges in their uphill battle to fulfill humanity’s dream of centuries and implement the Rule of Law. The novel sketches the toilsome quest for common ground and an esprit de corps. The pages intriguingly depict professional dilemma’s and personal doubts, intellectual genius next to human frailty, all set against the backdrop of vibrant skepticism of the outer world and the cynical powerplay of the Powers. Then suspense and intrigue unload in the election for a new President of the Court.

Following the downfall of his political career in Holland, his imprisonment at Loevestein, and his spectacular escape, Hugo Grotius spends ten years in exile in Paris before he dares to return. It is a costly miscalculation and he is forced to flee once again. In his dire straits the rising power of Sweden offers him the position of ambassador in Paris. Another ten years later, young Queen Christina summons him to Stockholm. What does she have in mind for him? Grotius sets out on his journey, unaware of what awaits him. It turns into a dramatic voyage, which ends abruptly four months later when, on his return journey, he suffers a shipwreck and passes away in Rostock. His plans and ultimate destination have always remained shrouded in mystery. This novel follows him on his perilous journey, allowing him to reflect on his eventful life. It tells of his ambitions, his dilemmas, and his regrets.

From the Review in Jus Gentium (2025):
Novels revolving around the life and times of distinguished international lawyers are exceedingly uncommon. Now, as we celebrate the 400th anniversary of Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) De jure belli ac pacis (1625), we have a … fine contribution to this unusual genre. Clémart … has a masterly command of all the sources relating to this fascinating subject. … the novelist uses his command … to relate key episodes in Grotius’ earlier experiences, achievements, miscalculations, and failures. This is all accomplished with absorbing eloquence and style, a compelling and easy read.
Recensie

The Casting Vote

De Beslissende Stem

Der Stichentscheid

Forthcoming 2027

At the dawn of the United Nations era, as empires crumble and a new world order struggles to emerge, one courtroom becomes the stage for a decision that will echo across history.

In The Hague, the World Court confronts a case as explosive as it is unprecedented: the contested rule of South Africa over South West Africa—present-day Namibia—at the height of apartheid. Brought forward by Liberia and Ethiopia, the case forces fourteen judges from across the globe to grapple with questions that defy easy answers: law versus justice, neutrality versus conscience, power versus principle.

As deliberations intensify in the summer of 1966, the Court reaches a deadlock. The final decision rests on one man—the President of the Court—and his casting vote. What follows is a moment of quiet drama with far-reaching consequences, shaping not only the fate of a nation, but the credibility of international justice itself.

Drawing on authentic court records and personal testimonies, this gripping novel takes you behind the bench, into the minds of the judges, where legal reasoning collides with moral conviction. In a world bound by rules, what happens when justice demands more than the law can give?
